Coming Events September 23 , 2009 Ag-West Bio and the Entrepreneurial Foundation present: The Investment & Commercialization Luncheon Series. The next luncheon is on September 23, 2009 with a seminar on how entrepreneurs can garner capital and build strategies for successful commercialization of their technology and product(s). Future topics will include: commercialization & IP protection basics, private equity, understanding risk, strategic alliances and disruptive technology. The topics are designed for early stage life sciences/technology development companies. However companies at any stage of the commercialization pathway will benefit from the ideas discussed. November 6 to 8, 2009 Saskatoon is hosting the 2nd annual “Saskatchewan in Demand” trade show November 6-8th, 2009 at Prairieland Exhibition. The trade show is specifically hosted to target consumers toward buying local and demonstrate the diversity of Saskatchewan Made Products. Last year’s trade show had excellent attendance and was a good indication of our desire to buy products “Made in Saskatchewan”. For more information, please go to the Saskatchewan In Demand website.

Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP) Deadline September 10The next deadline for applications to the Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan (ACS) for funding under the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP) is Thursday, September 10, 2009 for applications over $10,000. CAAP is a five-year (2009-2014), $163 million program with the objective of facilitating the agriculture, agri-food, and agri-based products sector's ability to seize opportunities, to respond to new and emerging issues, and to pathfind and pilot solutions to new and ongoing issues in order to help it adapt and remain competitive. CAAP is funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Launched as a successor to the Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food (ACAAF) program, the CAAP will continue to support industry-led initiatives at the national, regional and multi-regional levels. ACS members elect Kirk Flaman to the Board of Directors ACS would like to welcome our newest board member, Kirk Flaman of the Saskatchewan Seed Potato Growers Association, who will sit on the ACS Board of Directors in the Youth Director position. ACS members elected Kirk to the Board of Directors, while Jason Dean, representing the Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association, returns by acclamation. They will be joined by returning directors including Chair Murray Purcell, who represents the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, Vice- Chair Valerie Pearson, who represents the Saskatchewan 4-H Council, Secretary/Treasurer Darrell Schneider of the Saskatchewan Food Processors Association, Neil Ketilson of Sask Pork, Bob Morgan of POS Pilot Plant Corporation, and Allen Kuhlmann of the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is represented on the ACS Board by Dean Vey, while the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture is represented by Dr. Abdul Jalil. Value chain workshops set for November 5 and 6 The Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan will be holding two informative value chains workshops this fall. These workshops are numbers three and four in the series developed by the Saskatchewan Agri-Food Value Chain Initiative, designed for those who have started their value chains and are looking for information on entering the marketplace. Module 3 will teach participants how to identify market opportunities and create successful product positioning. MODULE 4 – November 6, 2009 Partnering & Collaboration: How to Approach Retailers Understanding the strategic challenges facing food retailers will help participants understand how to establish partnerships with the retail and food service market. CATE website undergoing improvements The Centre for Agri-Business Training and Education (CATE) website (www.agtraining.ca) is undergoing a series of improvements to better serve those looking for education and training opportunities in the agriculture and agri-food sector. CATE is a central clearinghouse for programs, courses, seminars, workshops offered by universities, colleges, associations and independent agencies. Thanks to new funding from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, CATE will be expanded and will include information on Growing Forward programming.
