CAAP funding update

Agriculture Council of SaskatchewanSince April 1, 2009, the ACS Board of Directors has approved Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP) funding for 43 projects for a total commitment of $5,519,164 for Saskatchewan projects. ACS delivers CAAP in Saskatchewan on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC).

CAAP is a five-year (2009-2014), $163 million national AAFC initiative. This federal program encourages farmers, processors, distributors, and retailers to work together to find innovative solutions to common concerns and to explore new market opportunities.

CAAP funds projects that align with priorities identified by industry and/or government at the national, regional and multi-regional levels by focusing on:

  • Seizing opportunities;
  • Responding to new and emerging issues;
  • Pathfinding and piloting solutions to new and ongoing issues.

A New Vaccine for Pork Producers

Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan Inc.Food safety has been in the spotlight recently with an increase in food borne illness outbreaks across North America. Livestock producers, who are already under pressure due to low commodity prices, are now under the spotlight as governments in North America and Europe become more vigilant in detecting bacteria strains in market-bound meat.

Prevtec Microbia Canada Inc. is working on an E. coli vaccine project that it hopes will give pork producers the ability to prevent a specific strain of the bacteria, complementing its current E. coli vaccine for pigs. Research for the project, which is funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP), a program delivered in Saskatchewan by the Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan, is being conducted by the Saskatchewan Research Council and the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO).

As Michel Fortin, President and CEO of Prevtec, explains, "The product is a live bacterial vaccine that is distributed orally, in the water." Eliminating the need for injections makes administration of the vaccine simple. Only one vaccination is required, with one dose per piglet, usually administered during weaning.

The new vaccine will be a combination to counter two strains of E. coli, F4 and F18, which can cause post weaning diarrhea (PWD) and edema disease (ED). Often, the specific E. coli. strain can be difficult for an individual producer to determine, making the new combination vaccine imperative in preventing disease.

Fortin says that PWD can cause mortality rates, even in healthy growing pigs, as high as 15-20%, when acceptable mortality rates are below 2%. "Even where PWD does not cause death," he says, "it can certainly affect weight gain, delaying growth and reducing pig performance."

Developing Healthy Foods and Ingredients Program Underway

Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan Inc.Demand for healthy foods and ingredients is increasing. Not just from consumers, but also from regulatory bodies, public health authorities and health ministries.

The Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre is meeting the growing demand for nutritional products through the Developing Healthy Foods and Ingredients Program. The program has received funding from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP). In Saskatchewan, CAAP is delivered by the Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan Inc.

According to the Food Centre's website: "Our tastebuds can distinguish four main taste sensations: sweet, sour, salty and bitter.  If we're working to reduce your product's salt content, that gives us three other taste sensations to work with.  Aroma, texture, visual appeal and temperature are also important factors affecting how flavour is perceived.  The Food Centre can compensate for reduced salt by developing foods that will appeal to other senses and adding different herbs or spices to bring out flavour in different ways."

The Food Centre's Product Development team has a combined total of 30 years in food development and have developed almost 500 products for the marketplace. Funding is available to spearhead business projects for development of healthy foods and ingredients. Contact the Food Centre's Healthy Foods Specialist, Mohamed Khan at (306) 933-7807 or email: mkhan@foodcentre.sk.ca to get started!

News from our Sister Councils

Agriculture Mentorship InitiativeAlberta: Ceapro Inc. (TSX VENTURE:CZO) is pleased to announce that it has been approved for funding of up to $1,339,625 under the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP). The funding for this program is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and is delivered by the Agriculture and Food Council of Alberta (AFC). This application encompasses five key innovative projects in line with Ceapro's focused strategy.

"This is a very exciting day in the history of Ceapro," said Gilles Gagnon, Acting President and Chief Executive Officer of Ceapro. "This multi-year agreement will allow Ceapro to seize the opportunity to advance the commercialization of novel and innovative technologies that have been developed at AAFC and the University of Alberta and to develop new products and processes that will enhance opportunities for Canadian agricultural producers. The activities carried out under this agreement will exemplify what value-added agriculture is about and what it can bring to the cosmeceuticals, nutraceuticals and even to the pharmaceuticals area."

"New products and improved manufacturing processes are vital for Canada's crop producers to remain competitive and profitable," said Honourable Laurie Hawn, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence & Member of Parliament (Edmonton Centre), on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "This investment will help develop new technologies, open new niche markets and expand even greater export opportunities for our farmers and for our economy."

"The Agriculture and Food Council is pleased to provide funding through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP) for Ceapro's development of new value-added products for the global cosmetic and personal care market," said AFC Chair Heather Broughton. "This innovative project will provide the opportunity for producers to diversify their production, as well as support and stimulate new research and education."
