CAAP funding update

Agriculture Council of SaskatchewanSince April 1, 2009, the ACS Board of Directors has approved Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP) funding for 37 projects for a total commitment of $5,210,959 for Saskatchewan projects. ACS delivers CAAP in Saskatchewan on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC).

CAAP is a five-year (2009-2014), $163 million national AAFC initiative. This federal program encourages farmers, processors, distributors, and retailers to work together to find innovative solutions to common concerns and to explore new market opportunities.

CAAP funds projects that align with priorities identified by industry and/or government at the national, regional and multi-regional levels by focusing on:

  • Seizing opportunities;
  • Responding to new and emerging issues;
  • Pathfinding and piloting solutions to new and ongoing issues.

Competitive information for farmers, in the information age

Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan Inc.All producers need information to be competitive, not only locally, but internationally too. Accessing that information has often been difficult for the individual farmer.

A new project by the Farmers of North America (FNA) is collecting all the existing data on the competitive factors in grain production in one easy to use interactive website. The project started in fall 2009, with the website to be available later this year.

The data will include: environment, access to capital (debt load, debt-equity ratio), government payment levels, fuel, fertilizer, chemical, machinery, transportation, land, labour, insurance, seed and taxation. Other relevant data may also be included.

While there is a widespread perception that all the information is readily available, the opposite is true, and in fact any gaps in information are not fully known. The FNA knows farmers need more data on production factors. This is the best way to help farmers equal the strong position of suppliers of farm goods and services.

SFPA putting Sask Made Marketplace up for sale

Agriculture Mentorship InitiativeThe Saskatchewan Food Processors Association (SFPA) has recently decided to sell the Saskatchewan Made Marketplace, after more than 6 years of owning and operating the business.  While the Marketplace is successful, the SFPA, as a small non-profit association, believes that the store needs the fresh ideas and resources of new ownership in order to flourish.

The store is located at 1621 8th St. East in Saskatoon.  It will continue to operate as normal until a sale is finalized.

The Saskatchewan Made Marketplace opened in the fall of 2004 and was originally intended to stay open through the end of the holiday season.  However, due to a positive response from consumers, the decision was made to keep the store running on a long-term basis.  After a couple of years, the Marketplace expanded to include an online store (
www.saskmade.ca).  Several hundred online orders have since been shipped to customers around the world.

During its 6 years in business the Saskatchewan Made Marketplace has generated excellent returns for its vendors, through retail sales and as a wholesale distribution centre.  The Marketplace also became well-known for its gift basket centre, which has produced thousands of custom-designed gift baskets with a "taste of home".

The SFPA is hopeful that the store will continue to operate with the vision of providing Saskatchewan's vast array of food processors, manufacturers, and artisans with a space to promote and sell their products to both local customers and visitors. SFPA believes that there is an opportunity for new and enthusiastic owners to embrace this vision and take the store to the next level of success.

The Saskatchewan Made Marketplace has been listed for sale through Doug Huntley of Century 21 Conexus Realty.  The listing can be viewed online at
www.doughuntley.com (Property ID: 100631137).  For more information, please contact Mr. Huntley at doug.huntley@century21.ca or (306) 227-1999.
